Survey data

Available dataset

All survey data collected by the Social Network Projects (the Kenya Diffusion and Ideational Change Project, the Malawi Diffusion and Ideational Change Project, and the Malawi Family Transfers Project) are available for download to interested researchers.

The survey data can be downloaded in four main configurations:

  • cross-sectional, single-sex dataset
  • cross-sectional, merged wife-husband dataset
  • longitudinal, single sex dataset
  • longitudinal, merged wife-husband dataset

Some of the merged dataset also incorporate village-level and data on interviewers' characteristics.

In order to make the data suitable for public use all names of individuals and villages have been removed from the data (not only for respondents but also for their named network partners in the social networks component of the questionnaire). Users who would like to have access to these names in order to conduct follow-up research on any of our samples (which we encourage), and users interested in special data configurations should contact us.

Access

The survey data collected by the Social Networks Project are available to researchers unconditionally. However, in order to be able to communicate with the users about data-related issues that might arise in the future, we need to know who is using them. For this reason, we request that the users fill out a registration form prior to downloading the files.

Because of the widespread concern about Internet privacy, we wish to stress the complete confidentiality of the Social Networks website. The information we gather will not be used for any commercial purposes.

Download

Users can download any of the data in STATA format (we recommend Stat/Transfer to change the format to SAS, SPSS or some other statistical platform).

Note that to save space and reduce transfer time all files are compressed. To uncompress the files use either the free software Winzip or a DOS/UNIX-based utility, such as pkzip.
