Qualitative
projects
The
qualitative component of the FTP was conducted in the same areas
as the main survey, but among people not sampled for either of
the questionnaires. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were
initially conducted by Mike
Mtika, and subsequently by two interviewers that he trained.
These
interviews explored two main issues: first, the extent to which
cousins, friends and other people about whom the survey did not
ask are also important sources of assistance, thereby allowing
us to estimate how muchour more limited map of the support network
is missing; and second, the specific circumstances in which assistance
is given or received, with questions directed at the effects
of ill-health, death, food shortages, and school fees on the
resource flows.
Transcripts of
selected qualitative interviews (with respondents' names and
other identifying information removed) and the interview
guide are available for download.
