Francis Obare successfully defended his dissertation, "Response to population-based voluntary counseling and testing for HIV in rural Malawi." Congratulations as well to Francis on his appointment as a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Population Council. Francis will be working with the Pop Council in Kenya.

Monica Grant's paper, "Children's school enrollment and HIV/AIDS in rural Malawi: The role of parental risk perceptions," has won the Martin Levine Student Essay Award at the American Sociological Association.

Stephane Helleringer successfully defended his dissertation, "Fishing in Deep Waters: a Study of Partnerships With Migrants and Their Implications for the Diffusion of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Likoma Island." Congratulations as well to Stephane on his appointment to direct research for the Karonga Prevention Study, a project with the University of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Lauren Gaydosh was awarded the Baltzell Prize for Outstanding Senior Thesis for her 2006 research in Malawi. Her thesis is titled "Marital Power and Decision-Making Processes Regarding Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV in Rural Malawi."
